For this edition of our Culture Hop series, we decided to head on over to Crown Center and write all about what one of Kansas City’s best shopping centers has to offer the city!

Crown Center Attractions

One of the most notable attractions that Crown Center has to offer is the Ice Terrace, Kansas City’s original outdoor skating rink, which is celebrating its 50th season this year! Even more exciting, is that today is the first day that reservations are not needed to skate! You will need to pay to skate however and rent ice skates if you do not have your own. For more information on skating, you can visit their website to learn more!

Ever wanted to get nose-to-nose with a shark? The Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium is the perfect place to do it! The aquarium has thousands of sea creatures for you to view, and tons of exhibits that let you and your family learn more about the ocean and its inhabitants right here in the middle of the country! You can check out the Green Sea Turtles in the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, including Lou, who came to KC in 2019 and loves to eat cucumbers! Additionally, the Aquarium features Kansas City’s only Ocean Tunnel, allowing you to get up close and personal with these beautiful animals.

If you’re looking to feed your children’s creativity, there’s no better place in the city than both the LEGOLAND Discovery Center, and Kaleidoscope! LEGOLAND provides families with one of the best opportunities for creative family fun in the whole city, with 12 LEGO-themed play zones, a 4D cinema, the opportunity to learn from a LEGO Master Builder, a laser ride, and more! Kaleidoscope is a free center where kids are encouraged to explore their artistic side, by painting and creating using materials provided by Hallmark and Crayola. Once they are done creating, they get to take home everything that they have created in what is truly one of Kansas City’s most unique attractions. Kaleidoscope was created by Hallmark as a gift to the children of Kansas City.

Theaters in Crown Center

The Coterie Theater is a “theater for all ages” located on the first floor of Crown Center, that provides a multitude of live performances covering a wide variety of topics and subjects. The Coterie currently is scheduled for performances of A Charlie Brown Christmas through Dec. 31st. The Coterie also provides community outreach programs, acting classes for all different levels of skill, and more. Additionally, Crown Center also features the Grand Theater, which is currently showcasing Quixotic’s Sensatia, Cirque Cabaret, which is an “interactive multimedia performance blending spectacular acrobatics, state-of-the-art visuals, live music, perfumery, and delicious desserts for our VIP guests to arouse each of the five senses.”

Dining & Shopping in Crown Center

Of course, Crown Center is also a hub of dining and shopping in the downtown area. Some highlights include Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant, where plates are served by overhead electric trains that are certain to delight the whole family, Burnt End BBQ, SPIN! Pizza, and so much more.

As for shopping, there is an equal amount of fun stores to explore, including the Crayola Kansas City store, Sportibles, The Best of Kansas City, Amy’s Hallmark, and many more spread out throughout Crown Center.
